Crypto PAC spending against Sherrod Brown tops $52 Million in Ohio Senate Race
Cryptocurrency-backed super PACs have spent over $52 million in Ohio's Senate race to unseat former Senator Sherrod Brown, highlighting the industry's massive political influence and its broader impact on global markets.

Two cryptocurrency-backed super PACs have logged roughly $52.6 million in expenditures for Ohio’s 2026 Senate race, driven by the industry’s push to unseat former Senator Sherrod Brown. This combined figure substantially surpasses the $30 million target Fairshake previously pledged in September. The implications of the race stretch past Ohio, particularly if the balance of power in Congress shifts in November.
The filings that push the total past $52 million
As of October 15, Defend American Jobs—an affiliate of Fairshake—reported spending approximately $46.66 million targeting the Ohio Senate contest. This figure incorporates a $15,600 public media production expenditure distributed on October 13 to oppose Brown. Meanwhile, the Digital Freedom Fund reported outlays of $5.94 million as of October 11, which included a $1.98 million disbursement on October 9 for voter-mailed campaign materials opposing Brown.
Combined, these figures show that more than $52.6 million has been poured into the electoral cycle through October 15. Defend American Jobs on its own outpaced the initial Fairshake spending pledge by upwards of $16 million. These cumulative figures represent year-to-date totals rather than spending incurred strictly after September.
Why the industry keeps coming after Brown
Ohio is no stranger to this dynamic. According to the AP, cryptocurrency advocates funneled over $40 million into the state’s 2024 Senate race, an election that ultimately resulted in Brown’s defeat.
He now faces another high-cost, lobby-driven campaign in a contest where control of Congress remains hanging in the balance.
What a Democratic Congress could mean for crypto
Reuters reports that even if Democrats secure control of either legislative chamber, it will not prevent the Trump administration from loosening crypto regulations. Nevertheless, a Democratic foothold could trigger congressional hearings, subpoenas, and investigations into the president’s ties to the sector.
Industry executives harbor specific concerns regarding Representative Sean Casten, given his advocacy for increased oversight and his opposition to the 2025 CLARITY Act.
As Ron Hammond, Wintermute’s policy chief, put it:
“He is no friend of the industry.”
Concurrently, Cryptopolitan noted that Fairshake affiliates funneled an additional $2.7 million into House races. Previously reported independent expenditure totals stood at $32.5 million for Defend American Jobs and $27.6 million for Protect Progress.
From Ohio ballots to global portfolios
The ripple effects extend far beyond Ohio. A working paper from Northern Illinois University analyzed 34 elections across 19 democracies between 2017 and 2024. The researchers observed that when a major regulatory nation entered a pre-election window, cross-market correlations among ten major cryptocurrencies increased by 0.85%.
In essence, regulatory uncertainty surrounding elections can cause different cryptocurrencies to move in tandem, stripping investors of portfolio diversification benefits even when holding multiple digital assets. The study documented this trend most prominently during electoral cycles in the U.S., U.K., Germany, France, and Japan, though it did not prove a direct causal link between political spending and token prices.
The financial stakes remain high. A CoinShares survey of 2,230 affluent investors across five nations found that 66% held digital assets. Additionally, an August survey of 30 fund managers collectively overseeing roughly $1.16 trillion revealed that regulation is the foremost worry for crypto investors. James Butterfill, head of research, also attributed weak market sentiment for Ether to waning expectations for the CLARITY Act.
Consequently, for global investors, Ohio’s $52.6 million political showdown encompasses much more than a single Senate seat. The election’s outcome could mold expectations for American crypto policy, directly impacting market sentiment, investment choices, and risk management across international borders.
